WOODWORK

Alper Demir has always been working with wood. Since a few years he has been focussing on turning wood. Fully in line with his obsessive character he is always in his small studio at the local makers space Stadsfabriek Alkmaar whenever he can.

Record of Time

Anna: "How come you are so obsessed with woodturning Alper?"
Alper: "I thought a lot about this and the last couple of years I tried to figure out why I enjoy working with wood so much. In my artwork I always tried to picture the total consciousness of the human experience in time and space. I am not aiming to understand the deep meaning of everything. Instead I focus on just a single moment and try to fully grasp that and build something out of it.
I think I started to feel that trees do the same I was always trying; recording moments. When I turn a fallen tree on the lathe, it seems like a very considerate record of time is becoming visible. It is like getting to know someone in a really intimate way."
