BIRD MIGRATION A mural for a refugee centre in Alkmaar (NL)

We created a series of murals and panels for the refugee centre in Alkmaar (NL), symbolising the journey of asylum seekers. Inspired by the annual autumn bird migration, in which some birds travel south while others arrive in the Netherlands, the artworks represent the migration journey that asylum seekers embark on in search of a safer future. This migration is not only a search for survival, but also for freedom. Phrases like "free as a bird" and the peace dove resonate as symbols of hope and liberty, which are central themes in this work.
The works shows an evolution from abstraction to recognisability. The mural in the lobby features angular, abstracted birds, reflecting the harshness and struggle of the journey. In contrast, the forms in the corridor gradually become more organic, symbolising the transition from uncertainty to hope. The panels on the lift wall serve as a link between these two worlds, with the shapes shifting from angular to organic, symbolising the process of change and growth.
The final mural, on the school wall, brings the birds' flight into a more recognisable form. You will see birds such as the tern, the wild duck and the barn swallow. The visual narrative ends with a powerful message: migration is not only a flight from the past, but also a hopeful movement towards the future, where the freedom of birds mirrors the freedom that we all seek.
